Tragic has stroke at Fugar headquarters of Etsako central local governmnet area of Edo state as a policeman reportedly killed two nursing mothers at a burial ceremony.
It was learnt that the shots that killed the women were accidentally released by one of the policemen attached to a traditional ruler in Uzaire clan of Etsako ethnic group, who attended the ceremony. It was said that the policeman’s gun went off as he tried to open the car door for the traditional ruler to go in. The two women, who hit by the bullets were said to be seated under the canopy along with other guests at the ceremony.
The incident led to confusion in the community as youths descended on the policemen, who eventually escaped. Confirming the incident, the state police commissioner, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, said he was informed of a case of accidental discharge, which claimed the lives of two women, last weekend.
“The policeman has been arrested and investigation has commenced,” Adegbuyi said. The name of the policeman whose fired the shot that killed the women was not disclosed. However, the name one of the women, who lost her live was given as Sandra Imhaku. It was said that she was backing her two months old baby when the incident occurred.
She was reportedly rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital, Irrua, on Sunday morning, where the doctor confirmed her dead. The other woman, whose name was also given as Mrs. Saliu, an indigene of Fugar, reportedly came from Warri, Delta State, in company with her husband to attend the funeral. She was said to have died instantly after the shooting.
